- The part I find interesting is the visualization of the higher dimensions via a 'graph on timeline' or the 'graph in graph' method.
Dimension, Environment: A certain dimension.
Duration, Time, D: Time as the fourth dimension (From the big bang to its end)
PS: Same words/terms can have many meanings this key tries to eliminate this confusion, in order to understand the idea represented below please accept these terms.
(They can also be used interchangeably.)
Disclaimer: These are lofty, arbitrary numbers used to represent an idea.
What's the 4th dimension?
The easy way of thinking about dimensions is how many axis's it takes to describe your location.
In a 1D environment, you would only describe the x-axis. (left and right) Meaning you can only move left and right.
In a 2D environment, you would describe your x and y-axis. (left, right & up, down)
In a 3D environment, you describe your x and y and z-axis for your location.
Continuing down this path you are required to add an axis, but how can this be represented in a dimension below the one we are trying to describe?
Why is 'duration' the fourth dimension...
It adds an extra axis to our 3-dimensional world.
Just like Length, Width, & Height, the Duration axis is infinity.
Duration is best visualized as an infinite timeline.
(from the start of the big bang to the end)
Dimension | Axes |
---|---|
1D | ← Length → |
2D | ← Width → |
3D | ← Height → |
4D | ← Duration → |
Can we see it?
Well technically yes although not fully and not in real-time.
Used to describe a path an object takes through space-time is called 'a world line' or a 'spime.'
This is how we would represent a human in the 4th dimension. (Your whole life at the same time.)
If you want to visualize this from our dimension these videos demonstrates it perfectly. →
Imagine a flipbook with each image representing a moment in your life. If you are an image on those pages you would only know 1 page at a time and change as it gets flipped through.
The same way we only know one time in space per moment. And living your life is just like a long flipbook.
Breaking dimensions with an extra axis?!
Breaking 2D with 3D?!
Another way of visualizing the 2D world is with an ant on paper, it can only move left-right & up-down. When the ant is on the left side of the page the only way to get to the right side is to walk across...
But with the help of using the 3rd dimension (z-axis), you can roll up the paper and the ant can travel instantly from the left side to the right side.
Breaking 3D with 4D?!
Similarly, it would be possible to use a 4th axis ( Duration ) to bend the 3rd dimension.
Custom infinite visualization!
Only 1 quadrant is represented below to visualize it more evidently.
